Dear Readers,

A student once asked me a beautiful question, “Do you think we can have empathy with the Earth?” If empathy contains an element of reciprocity, what would empathy with the Earth look like? How is our footprint received and responded to by the land we walk upon? Perhaps walking is a physical act of empathy between body and earth.

In this issue, Lin Bautze offers a perspective on climate change wherein stepping on Earth with intent can initiate us into empathy and an awareness of how we balance freedom with responsibility. The courageous life of imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient Narges Mohammadi is itself a picture of freedom and responsibility that begs for empathy in the social realm. And, it seems, even the mistletoe around the Goetheanum arises in empathetic response to a changing landscape.

As you walk through this issue, may you find yourself received and responded to.
