War in the Gulf region – is peace possible? Lecture and conversation with Gerald Häfner
In international politics, the rule of law and diplomatic mediation have been replaced for some years now by the law of the strongest and most powerful, as is evident in the wars in Ukraine, the Middle East, Sudan and Myanmar, and since 28 February 2026 also in the Gulf region.
Current events are increasingly dominated by crises. The Goetheanum cannot remain silent in the face of these developments. Gerald Häfner, a member of the Executive Council and head of Social Sciences Section at the Goetheanum, will shed light on certain aspects of these developments and provide an opportunity for audience members to form their own opinions and participate in the discussion.
Gerald Häfner was a member of the German Bundestag and the European Parliament and initiated civil society organisations such as Mehr Demokratie and Democracy International. In the 1990s, prompted by the long history of war, murder and genocide in the world, he wrote a petition to the German government calling for an International Criminal Court (ICC), a call that contributed to establishment of the ICC. He is committed to peace, both on a larger and smaller scale, and to carrying the strengths of Europe – mediation and understanding – into the geopolitical landscape of interests.
The invitation to this event comes from Justus Wittich on behalf of the Goetheanum’s Executive Council, from Gerald Häfner on behalf of the Social Sciences Section and from Marion Debus on behalf of the Medical Section at the Goetheanum.
