Mystery Dramas

The film documentation on working with Rudolf Steiner’s Mystery Dramas and the lectures about the dramas have been viewed around 530 times so far.

It was fortunate that cameraman Bernard Bonnamour had been interested in the Goetheanum before and had seen Rudolf Steiner’s Mystery Dramas there. Human warmth was tangible at once.

The idea for a film documentation came up in December 2020 when the Mystery Drama ensemble was rehearsing but then not permitted to perform. For me, filming was a way of connecting with our audiences and anyone else who was interested, of providing glimpses into our work, sharing thoughts about the dramas, talking about the situation we were in, giving insight into scenes and letting the dramas speak for themselves. The idea was never to film the entire performance, and as a means of showing what we were working on, the medium has much to give.

Bernard Bonnamour wanted to come close to the action, and because this is a suitable stylistic tool for the dialogical aspect of theatre, we allowed this to happen.

In addition, the Mystery Dramas depict experiences of inner development and the presentation of these experiences precedes a real spiritual environment and the dialogue with spiritual beings in their own dimensions and realms. Here, we are working intensely out of the movement of eurythmy that has not yet become form, with the aim of proceeding from the movement or periphery of colour to a delicate but distinct, moving form. When the camera comes close to the eurythmist, we have a clear perception of the outer human form, without the magic of its sphere of origin. That was a challenge that could not be resolved.
