Haus Schuurman
A group of alumni and students have initiated a fundraising project to support the Goetheanum with the required expenses for Haus Schuurman´s renovation.
Sebastian Jüngel Why are you, as users of Haus Schuurman, concerned with its maintenance?
Charlotte Lehman We study here, and by doing so, one realizes how special and unique this place is.
Josefa Vial We invest much energy in our studies and receive so much affection from the teachers and the whole Goetheanum that we want to give something back.
Edda Nehmiz This building should be preserved for future generations. The Goetheanum looks after it - but Justus Wittich, the treasurer, is grateful if we can raise 100,000 Swiss Francs to support the renovation, although around 600,000 Swiss Francs will be needed in total.
Reaching as many people as possible.
Jüngel What is your strategy?
Vial We will try to reach people on Instagram. We tell them about the building's history, its architecture and the studies in Haus Schuurman. We also use different channels such as the homepage where one can make a donation, and soon also a crowd-funding platform, in order to address various groups.
Lehman Via the crowd-funding platform we hope to reach people around the world. We will show the Campus in general and in relation to the history of this place. Haus Schuurman is a beautiful building and the last design by Rudolf Steiner.
Nehmiz We keep people informed via our homepage about the progress of the renovation work.
Jüngel Why is history so important to you? Why do you not opt for a modern new building?
Vial History provides a foundation. Relating to history means one does not stand alone. And this building, in particular, is representative of something: for Rudolf Steiner, the architecture of a building was connected with its content.
Lehman In Australia, where I come from, there aren't that many old buildings; similarly in Chile, where Josefa comes from. An old building reveals its temporal context and allows us to experience it.
Nehmiz For me, the building represents the future because our study courses are aimed at future generations.

Jüngel Will the renovation change the character of the building?
Nehmiz No, the task is to keep its character. The roof, outer shell, and windows will be refurbished in the first step.
Jüngel What does the building mean to you personally?
Vial Motherly warmth: it is like home. We study here in a large group, enjoy what we are learning, experience love, knowledge, and the ability to make judgments.
Lehman Coziness. One feels held.
Nehmiz It is a building for people. For study, music and communication. Once it has been renovated, it will be a building able to host and welcome future generations of students. Only when people work together something can come into the world. We hope that by reaching out to the alumni and friends that the required funds can be raised so that this special building can continue be the place to study Anthroposophy at the Goetheanum.
